Intentional Camera Movement Photography
Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) is exactly what it sounds like and goes against every other technique I have tried. Normally when I am out taking landscape or nature photos I strive for precise focus and often rely on a tripod. All this gets dropped with ICM.
There is a certain freedom and element of surprise in creating ICM images. These captures are not reproducible since there are multiple variables at play. The shutter speed and the speed and direction of the camera movement are the main variables that determine the result. Some of these images use a combination of ICM and multiple exposure.
I use both a full frame Nikon and a Sony mirrorless. Neutral density filters are used to have the shutter speed slow enough to get the desired effect. There are also several apps for smart phones that render this look.
There is very little post processing involved in these images. My camera has a setting that combines multiple images together. I do most of my own printing and matting and use a Canon Pro Graf 1000 printer. For larger images and ones done on different media, I outsource the work.
These images represent a slight detour from my attachment to realism, but it has been fun to explore a different technique. If you enjoy photography and haven’t given this a try, I recommend it as something new, liberating, and full of surprise.
I hope you enjoy the images on display.
