A journey of equality and inclusion
Bainbridge Islander Lance Garland is getting acclaim for his memoir Out There. His dramatic story recounts a journey from fear and oppression in a fundamentalist upbringing and as a sailor in the US Navy during “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”, to finding self-acceptance and love as a proud advocate for gay rights while becoming a firefighter and outdoor enthusiast. The book is also a paean to the healing power of nature—another and important way of being “out there.”
