Recognizing Dick Turpin
Akuyea Karen Vargas heads up a panel to tell us about the effort to recognize John Henry “Dick” Turpin, a prominent African American in the U.S. Navy who survived naval disasters and achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer, became a prominent Bremerton citizen following his retirement. While Turpin died in 1962 he is just now being recognized through the renaming of the Bremerton Post Office on February 22.
