For many coastal Salish Tribal people in the maritime Pacific Northwest, Treaty Day is one of the most important days of the year, as it commemorates the signing of the Treaty of Point Elliott in 1855, 169 years ago. This Treaty gives Tribal people certain rights, notably the right to fish, hunt and gather, but others as well.

Two important elements to understand are the sovereignty of the Tribal Nations and the significance of the term “treaty.” The power of these two pieces is integral to understanding the importance of these agreements then and now.
