Words that hurt; words that heal
We’ll look at some examples of how attention to language and naming is serious business. Streets, buildings, organizations are changing their names as an awareness of that earlier terms struck many listeners as insensitive or even cruel. A new name for the Charles Wilkes Elementary School [x̌alilc (Halilts) Elementary] and a new name for the Washington Audubon Society [Nature Forward] followed awareness that their namesakes were white supremacists. We’ll talk about how using terms and phrases like ‘chief,’ ‘off the reservation,’ or being ‘sold down the river’ are insensitive at best and racist at worst.
